At the 14U level, coaches increase the instructional focus on softball strategies and tactics while continuing to reinforce the fundamental skills. Players continue to use a 60’ base path but are introduced to a 43’ pitcher’s mound distance at this level. Advanced rules are called with some alterations based on league participation.
14U Softball is the most competitive level of baseball in Lancaster Youth Baseball and Softball. Most players in 14U will be 13 and 14-years-old, although qualified 12 year-olds may also be drafted onto 14U teams if they meet the player assessments.
Developmental Guidelines for 14U Softball
Players entering 14U Softball should be able to demonstrate the following skills:
Players entering 14U have demonstrated command of the basic skills of softball (fielding, catching, throwing, batting and base running). They also understand appropriate actions in game situations, such as when and where to make put-outs, how to steal bases, how to tag-up on fly balls, and how to execute cut-offs.
Players who don’t meet the developmental guidelines for 14U, should remain in 12U for an additional season.
14U Softball Division Details
Players compete for positions and playing time, although every child in 14U plays a minimum of two defensive innings each game. Players will generally play 1-2 positions, based on a number of factors.
Teams observe continuous batting; the batting order includes all players on the team.
Games last a maximum of six innings.
Adult umpires call 14U games.
Season standings are tracked and regular-season champions are recognized.
14U teams participate in a end-of-year tournament at the conclusion of the regular season.
Teams will typically have 1-2 practices and 1-2 games each week. The season, which begins in late April and ends in late June, includes approximately 8-10 games.
